Apparently explorer Earnest Shackleton placed the following notice in a newspaper while preparing for an expedition to Antarctica:
"Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in event of success."
Supposedly there were 5,000 men and 3 women who responded!
Have we become too comfortable today?

Women had more sense! (And we won’t mention Shackleton’s mistress – one faithful wife was not enough!)
Yes, it was an amazing and heroic tale of survival and mateship that Shackleton and his men went through- but the sad thing is that most of those men who survived their terrible ordeal were sent to the first world war within 12 months- I suspect most of them did not survive- don’t know exact figures though.
Very sad. I wasn’t aware of that. Thanks Helen
